Oitavos Dunes

2007 Portuguese Open

The prevailing Northerly winds blew the field away during the 2007 Portuguese Open leaving the most unexpected winner.

Pablo Martin made European tour history at Oitavos Dunes being the first amateur to win a Tournament. The young Spaniard held his nerve down the 18th hole hitting an incredible 4 iron to within 8 feet and two putting to win the Portuguese Open

Pablo Martin was offered one of two invitations by Oitavos Dunes benefiting from his fathers’ long time friendship with the Club. With a well played second round the Spaniard was able to make the cut by one stroke and provoke a wave of excitement within the Club. In the third round, with the wind quietening down, he produced the best score of the day and tied the course record with a brilliant 65 under leaving himself in contention for Sunday. By Sunday morning Pablo’s family and Club members had gathered around to follow the young man. Much to everyone’s delight, under tough wind conditions, Pablo showed tremendous maturity and talent offering everyone a day to be remembered! History was written at Oitavos Dunes!
