Oitavos Dunes

2005 Portuguese Open

The first European Tour event held at Oitavos Dunes ended with a dramatic finale and an unexpected winner.
Paul Broadhurst was on his way to the airport after finishing 13 under par but trailing by 3, with the leaders on the
17th tee.

Before he jumped in his car he was told that British Open winner Paul Lawrie triple bogeyed the 17th and the experienced Englishman Barry Lane was in serious trouble on the 18th hole. The rest is history and Broadhurst was crowned the 49th Portuguese Open Champion.

Barry Lane arrived at the 18th tee on Sunday afternoon needing a par 4 to win the tournament. The next 15 minutes turned out to be a nightmare. A pulled shot into the sand dune on the left and a bad recovery effort, which crossed the fairway left him struggling to hold his lead. It all went incredibly wrong for Lane with an out of bounds and a penalty drop suffering a bad bounce. Lane carded a 9 on the final hole and ending his chances of victory.
